Youngsters and staff of Golfhill Primary School in Denniston, Glasgow, will move into a newly refurbished wing of Whitehill Secondary from August 2010.
Following a public consultation process, which started in April this year and agreement at today’s (11 September) Executive committee, around £2.5 million will be spent on the primary school’s new location.
Both schools will retain their own identity and as specifically requested by parents and staff, Westercraigs Nursery will remain in hutted accommodation in the grounds of the secondary, to be reviewed at a later date.
Councillor Jonathan Findlay, Executive Member for Education, said today: "The decision will enhance the current educational benefits for both Golfhill and Whitehill as an all-through campus.
The local community will also benefit with improved sports facilities available for their use."
The Golfhill primary consultation is part of the council’s school modernisation strategy - reducing the number of children and young people being educated in poor or unsuitable buildings and resulting in improved learning environments for Glasgow’s children.
The original proposal to full council in January 2009 outlined a preferred option of co-locating the primary school into the west wing of Whitehill but after extensive discussions with parents and interested parties, this was revised to the east wing.
Money will also be spent on replacing the existing football and hockey pitches with a synthetic, all-weather one and the children and young people of both schools will benefit from a multi use games area as well.
The move will have no effect on catchment areas for the primary school or existing transfer arrangements to secondary education.
