Kier has been appointed by the City of Edinburgh Council to deliver a £23m retrofit of residential accommodation in the Craigmillar and Peffermill districts of Edinburgh.
Procured via the Scottish Procurement Alliance (SPA) framework, the scheme underpins the council’s environmental objectives. Kier will upgrade 114 homes to create modern, energy-efficient living spaces for residents.
Planned works include modernising and extending lift shafts so that lifts serve every floor, improving accessibility throughout the buildings. New external wall insulation will boost heat retention and energy performance, while fresh façade render will enhance the appearance of the blocks. All flats will receive new windows to further improve thermal comfort and overall living conditions.
Fire safety will be strengthened with a new firefighting lift to support emergency access, advanced early warning smoke and fire detection systems, and the installation of sprinklers in every flat.
Philip McDowell, regional director for Kier Construction North & Scotland, said: "Securing this project with the City of Edinburgh Council is a clear demonstration of the trust placed in us to deliver high-quality residential refurbishment at scale. This project builds on our proven track record of delivering complex refurbishment schemes in live environments, including our successful work at Prospecthill Court. There, we demonstrated our ability to enhance homes while maintaining a strong focus on resident engagement, safety and quality. We will bring that same expertise and collaborative approach to Craigmillar and Peffermill, ensuring we deliver lasting value for residents, the council and the wider community."
Kier points to its residential retrofit credentials, including the transformation of Prospecthill Court in Inverclyde, where residents’ heating costs have reduced to an average of around £10 per week due to improved energy efficiency, alongside a projected saving of 228 tonnes of CO₂ over 10 years.
Through its social value commitments, Kier will work closely with residents so their feedback helps shape the programme and delivers a positive impact that extends beyond the project timeline.
