Shetland's key economic development agencies took up residence in their new office last week, the architecturally stunning and energy efficient Solarhus at the North Ness Business Park in Lerwick.
The iconic building enables the co-location of Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) with Shetland Islands Council (SIC) Economic Development Unit, Shetland Development Trust, Skills Development Scotland and Highlands and Islands Partnership Programme. One member of staff from Shetland Tall Ships 2011 Limited is also based at Solarhus before a move to Harbour House later in the year.
The new office will be a central point for all services to Shetland's business community. Those looking to start a new business or needing advice for their activities in serving local markets will be able to access the new Business Gateway service delivered by SIC. HIE, through its new account management service, will lead on working with businesses trading beyond the local market. Social enterprises with growth potential are also a priority for HIE.
Specially trained staff, backed by a team of advisors can offer business support, including marketing and IT to the whole range of businesses of any size or ambition. Based on the already established system for recording and sharing initial enquiries between the agencies, clients will receive the most appropriate support they require.
SIC Economic Development Unit operates a variety of schemes that provide support by way of grant funding and commercial financing to businesses, organisations and individuals to projects which benefit the Shetland economy.
HIE area director for Shetland Stuart Robertson said: "This highly energy-efficient building creates a superb working environment with its inspirational use of light and space. We have a unique opportunity to generate new ideas for sustainable development, through joint service provision, that will help us to deliver the Scottish Government's economic strategy more effectively."
Head of economic development at Shetland Islands Council, Neil Grant, said: "First and foremost we are here to support and develop the Shetland economy, and I am very pleased that our combined services are now working even closer in a building that was designed to suit the customer."
Business Gateway can be accessed online at www.bgateway.com or by telephone: 0845 609 6611.
