North Ayrshire Council's planning committee has given the go-ahead for the construction of a five megawatt hydrogen-fuelled power station.
Outline planning permission was granted on Tuesday for the station, at Glengarnock.
It is described as the UK's first wind hydrogen balancing system. It is intended to take excess electricity from a wind farm during quiet periods to produce hydrogen which will be stored and used to generate power when demand is high.
The operators, Wind Hydrogen Ltd. of Angelsey said the combined wind farm and generating project would result in a combined investment of £60m to the local economy and create 25 full time jobs.
Permission is conditional on Wind Hydrogen Ltd agreeing to make proper provision for site restoration at the end of the plant's life.
