Police are appealing for witnesses after vandals smashed a 20ft wall along the edge of a West Lothian footbridge which is over a century old.
Over £100,000 worth of damage was caused by the vandals using sledgehammers between 1pm and 3pm on Monday.
The bridge near the Lanthorn Centre in Dedridge will be closed for some considerable time while repairs are carried out.
Alan Scott, a Lothian and Borders Police spokesman, said: "This is a wanton mindless act of vandalism to an historic icon in this part of the town.
"An estimated cost of up to £10,000 to repair the bridge has been quoted.
"We would appeal to anyone who knows who is responsible for the vandalism to contact the police."
