Nationwide has reinforced its long-term commitment to Scotland by enlarging its footprint at 177 Bothwell Street, Glasgow's largest office building.
The site, formerly Virgin Money's headquarters and set to be rebranded as Nationwide later this year, sits at the heart of the city's business district. Around 3,000 colleagues will be located there as Nationwide grows its business banking operation.
From spring 2027, the building society will take two additional floors, bringing its total to five. The office offers panoramic views across the city centre and features a 150-metre rooftop running track. It is among Glasgow's most sustainable workplaces, powered by 100 per cent renewable energy from a South Lanarkshire wind farm and operating with zero-carbon emissions.
Across Scotland, Nationwide now has the largest branch network, with 80 branches in total — 44 Nationwide and 36 Virgin Money — all pledged to remain open until at least 2030.
The network supports communities beyond everyday banking. Through its Fairer Futures programme, Dementia UK's Admiral Nurses run clinics in 250 Nationwide and Virgin Money branches, including in Scotland. A new initiative will see defibrillators and bleed kits installed in every branch, and many locations provide Safe Spaces for domestic abuse support.
Nationwide branches also deliver Digital Lessons and offer Scam Checker services, while Virgin Money branches help tackle data poverty via the National Databank, providing free mobile data to eligible people.
Dame Debbie Crosbie, CEO of Nationwide Building Society said: "Scotland is central to Nationwide's future growth and our Bothwell Street office is at its heart. We are already connected to a large number of families and businesses in Scotland and we're looking forward to bringing the benefits of the UK's biggest building society and largest branch network to even more Scottish communities."
Stephen Flynn said: "Glasgow has a strong international reputation as a financial centre and I am delighted Nationwide is making Bothwell Street home of its Scottish operations, investing in the people and the place to support Public Public future growth and innovation. I look forward to the new expanded offices bringing new opportunities for business, staff and customers in the years ahead."
