South Ayrshire Council has agreed to advance three major development projects in Prestwick, utilizing the town's Capital Regeneration budget.
During a council meeting on Thursday 26 March, officials outlined the allocation of funds following a commitment of £2 million made in 2024 for local investment.
The decision follows extensive consultation with the public, stakeholders, and Prestwick Civic Pride to determine how the regeneration budget should be distributed.
A significant portion of the funding, totalling £1 million, has been earmarked for the Prestwick Promenade and Seafront. The goal of this investment is to bolster the town's status as a tourist destination and stimulate economic growth. Planned improvements will focus on "Gateway Locations" at Grangemuir Road, Burgh Road, and Links Road, with works intended to enhance arrival points, accessibility, and the overall quality of the public realm.
In response to community interest in a bathing lake or "lido", Councillors approved a £50,000 allocation to fund a feasibility study. Council staff will now work with residents to form a trust body to oversee the project. This initial investment will evaluate the financial, environmental, technical, and operational viability of the lido before any further capital is committed.
The council also identified the reinstatement of the Freeman's Hall steeple as a priority for the town's heritage. The landmark is considered of high civic and architectural importance. While initial assessments suggest that restoring the steeple using salvaged original materials is possible, the project remains subject to further investigation. A budget of £750,000 will be held from the regeneration fund pending the outcome of grant funding applications, after which a final report will be presented to members.
Kevin Braidwood, Depute Chief Executive and Director of Housing, Operations and Development, said: "I'm pleased that we've been able to provide an update on regeneration plans for Prestwick and identify priorities in line with feedback from stakeholders and the public. This investment aims to drive Prestwick forward – creating opportunities for visitors and residents to enjoy our scenic coast – as well as maintaining the town's rich history and heritage."
