New steel frames are now in place at several sites as Dumfries and Galloway's network of active and sustainable transport hubs moves ahead, supported by the UK Government's Levelling Up Fund.
The hubs are designed to make everyday journeys more joined‑up and accessible, helping people travel around towns to reach shops, services, education and workplaces.
Steel structures have been installed at Annan, Langholm and Sanquhar, marking a major step in construction. Preparatory works are progressing at Stranraer and Newton Stewart ahead of the frames being lifted into position. Building starts at Castle Douglas this week, with works in Gatehouse of Fleet due to begin in April.
Hubs for Dalbeattie and Whithorn are also planned for delivery in the coming months, with confirmation of construction start dates to follow.
Each location will combine facilities for walking, wheeling, cycling and zero‑emission travel, such as secure cycle parking, e‑bike and electric vehicle charging, and EV hire. Selected sites will additionally enhance bus provision with new waiting areas and real‑time information screens. In Annan, Sanquhar and Stranraer, the hubs are sited close to rail services to provide convenient connections. Some hubs will also feature bike and dog wash points.
Further investment in local transport will include new electric buses and upgrades to bus stops.
Construction is set to continue through spring and summer, with all hubs scheduled to open to the public before the end of the year. Further updates will be issued as the programme progresses.
