Rail services at Aberdeen Station are set to return to a full schedule this weekend after the successful completion of a £3.8 million track renewal project. The station had been subject to closures over the previous three weekends to allow Network Rail engineers to carry out critical upgrades designed to bolster long-term reliability for passengers.
The extensive programme of works focused on platforms 3, 4, 6, and 7. During the delivery phase, teams replaced nearly 1.5 miles of rail, installed approximately 1,500 new sleepers, and laid 4,500 tonnes of fresh ballast. By scheduling the core works over weekends, the project team successfully maintained the majority of weekday services throughout the construction period.
This latest investment follows the significant £8 million redevelopment of Aberdeen Station completed in 2022, marking a continued commitment to modernising the rail infrastructure in the northeast of Scotland.
Ross Moran, Route Director at Network Rail Scotland, stated: "These upgrades are important to keep the railway safe and fit for the future. Our teams worked carefully within the short access windows available to complete a significant amount of work over the three planned weekends. This approach helped us keep most weekday services running as normal while still delivering the improvements required. We appreciate that any change to journeys can cause disruption, and I want to thank customers for their patience while the work was carried out. Their support helped us make the upgrades needed to keep trains running smoothly."
Mark Ilderton, ScotRail Service Delivery Director, added: "Aberdeen station is a key gateway for the northeast of Scotland, supporting thousands of journeys every day and connecting communities across the region and beyond, so it's great to see the £3.8million programme of track improvements completed. This investment builds on the £8million redevelopment of the station in 2022 and represents continued investment in the region's railway infrastructure. The upgrades will help improve reliability and support smoother journeys for our customers. I'd like to thank customers for their patience while this essential work was carried out. With services back to normal this weekend, we look forward to welcoming customers on board as we continue to deliver a safe and reliable railway."
