SSE Renewables has submitted a formal application to the Scottish Government to vary the existing consent for the Bhlaraidh Wind Farm Extension. The proposal seeks to increase the tip height of the 15 approved turbines from the previously consented 180 metres to a maximum of 230 metres.
The extension is located on the Glenmoriston Estate, north-west of Invermoriston in the Great Glen, adjacent to the existing 32-turbine Bhlaraidh Wind Farm. By increasing the height and blade length of the turbines, SSE aims to maximise the site's energy output and operational efficiency without increasing the total number of units.
Key Capacity Details:
• Bhlaraidh Extension Capacity: Up to 108 megawatts (MW).
• Existing Bhlaraidh Capacity: 108MW (operational since 2017).
• Combined Site Total: Approximately 216MW of renewable energy.
The project team has already conducted extensive consultations, including public exhibitions held in June and September 2025 at the Invermoriston Millennium Hall. Feedback from these sessions, alongside statutory stakeholder input, has shaped the final Section 36C variation request.
Ian Stewart, Project Manager at SSE Renewables, stated:
"Bhlaraidh Extension is an opportunity to build on the success of the operational wind farm at Bhlaraidh and significantly increase the amount of renewable electricity being generated in the Great Glen. We are grateful to the many members of the community who participated in our consultation process. The feedback we received has been an essential part of this application."
The original extension was green-lit by the Energy Consents Unit in August 2022. However, SSE noted that a redesign was necessary to address evolving economic challenges and ensure the project's long-term feasibility. If approved, the project will contribute significantly to Scotland's net-zero targets and provide local investment through a dedicated community fund.
Public representations regarding the new application are being accepted by the Energy Consents Unit until 20 March 2026.
