AC Whyte has welcomed the first group of 10 young people to its Barrhead head office this week through the GROW (Glasgow Regional Opportunities for Work) programme, an employer-led effort to broaden access to careers in key sectors.
The session was delivered by Tommy Campbell, Skills Academy Principal at AC Whyte, alongside Operations Director Jamie McLean. The pair offered a candid look at the construction industry, outlined the variety of roles and progression routes available, and involved participants in practical tasks and open discussion.
Run in partnership with Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, DYW Glasgow, DYW LED and DYW West, GROW provides meaningful exposure to the workplace to build confidence, raise aspirations and support informed career choices.
The bespoke, devolved regional skills programme is aligned to Glasgow's economic priorities and highlights growth areas including construction, renewables, housing, digital, finance, health, hospitality and the creative industries, helping participants understand realistic pathways into employment.
Backed by a £1 million skills investment from JPMorganChase, GROW aims to support more than 700 young people and deliver in excess of 40,000 hours of work experience across the Glasgow City Region. Inclusion and social mobility are central, with targeted, evidence-led engagement for those from lower socio-economic and disadvantaged backgrounds.
AC Whyte's involvement reflects a commitment to early engagement and real-world experience. The company said this was the first of several sessions it has pledged to deliver with Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, DYW Glasgow, DYW LED and DYW West to create long-term opportunities for young people across the region.
