ScottishPower has launched its inaugural EMPower Network Programme, a new scheme designed to retrain military veterans and help them secure long-term careers in the energy sector.
The initiative is crucial as ScottishPower recruits at a record rate to deliver "the biggest rewiring Britain has seen," aiming to create 300 new jobs this year alone and 2,000 additional jobs by 2027.
The 12-month EMPower Programme includes:
Formal Training: Accredited qualifications and structured learning.
Placements: Rotational placements across the business for hands-on experience.
Mentoring: Guidance from experienced industry professionals.
Participants will develop the technical and leadership skills needed in the UK's critical energy industry. Roles for the veterans joining EMPower will be based across Central and Southern Scotland, North West England, and Mid/North Wales.
Research shows that while over 80% of former military personnel believe their skills are transferable, many struggle to find long-term civilian employment. EMPower is designed to bridge this gap, recognising the inherent resilience, adaptability, and leadership qualities veterans bring.
Nicola Connelly, CEO of SP Energy Networks, highlighted the value veterans bring to the sector: "Veterans bring resilience, adaptability and leadership, and the EMPower Network Programme is about recognising that value and giving them the opportunity to build meaningful careers while helping us deliver the infrastructure Britain needs."
The programme supports the energy sector's rapid transformation towards electrification, helping to build a more diverse and resilient workforce for the future grid.
