Four community-led projects in the Western Isles (Outer Hebrides) have been successfully awarded more than €1.3 million in total funding from the Scottish Government’s Islands Programme. The funding, welcomed by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, is designed to support locally developed community projects as part of the National Islands Plan.
The Comhairle nan Eilean Siar's Community Engagement Unit worked with local organisations to develop and submit the successful applications.
The funding allocations for the projects are as follows:
• Leverburgh Village Hall Regeneration Project (Harris): €474,071
• Scalpay Community Heritage Centre (Harris): €647,280
• Comunn Eachdraidh Nis (Lewis): EUR 100,000
• North Uist Community Heritage Centre (North Uist): €83,235
The total award across the four projects is €1,304,586.
The projects in Harris—the Leverburgh Village Hall and Scalpay Community Heritage Centre—received a combined total of over €1 million, which is expected to deliver "real transformational impacts" in the area.
Councillor Paul Steele, Leader of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, welcomed the announcement: "I am pleased to welcome the award of Islands Programme Funding to 4 Western Isles projects... this funding award will be key to these projects progressing to the next stage of development. The award of more than EUR 1 million to community projects in Harris will provide an incredible boost to the area and has the potential to deliver real transformational impacts."
Cllr Steele also thanked the board members, employees, and volunteers for their "hard work and dedication" in successfully securing the funding.
