A new skills and learning project, Construction Aware, has been launched in Glasgow as a collaborative effort to tackle the ongoing recruitment and skills challenge facing the construction and built environment sector.
The ambitious three-year programme was co-designed with industry and the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, and is facilitated by Glasgow City Council and FARE. It has been established thanks to funding from the Wheatley Group and Land Services Registry.
The project directly addresses the challenge where the sector struggles with recruitment and young people lack the requisite skills and experience to secure roles.
Construction Aware aims to engage hundreds of pupils from S3 through to senior phase to inspire, inform, and develop their skill base through a series of practical interventions.
The programme will offer:
• Accredited training
• Work experience
• Progression to post-secondary destinations, including modern apprenticeships and graduate-level posts.
The initiative is working with hundreds of pupils and involves around 30 employers and numerous partners. This allows for the early identification of talent and provides equal access to the labour market.
Stakeholders are continually seeking to add to their partnership base and resources, urging any organisations or individuals who can help make a difference to the sector's skills landscape across the Glasgow region and beyond to get involved.
