McLaughlin & Harvey has showcased its commitment to delivering social impact through its business operations, using the recently constructed Usher Building for the University of Edinburgh as a prime example of its responsible business strategy in action.
The construction firm stated its aim is to improve the environment, boost the economy, and enhance social wellbeing for communities. During the building's construction, the company collaborated with local education and training providers to deliver:
• Meaningful work experience placements.
• Traineeships and employment opportunities.
• Site tours, curriculum support sessions, and career guidance.
This effort was designed to inspire and educate future talent, helping to tackle local poverty and inequality while increasing young people's skills and employability.
The construction of the Usher Building also demonstrated McLaughlin & Harvey's commitment to supporting the local economy through ethical procurement.
The company confirmed that, for the Usher Building project:
• 90% of its total spend was with Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs).
• Social enterprise spend topped £127,000.
The social enterprise spend included partnering with a manufacturer of bespoke fixed furniture and external planters that provides employment and training opportunities for disabled and disadvantaged members of society. They also utilised a cleaning company that supports individuals facing barriers to employment.
McLaughlin & Harvey uses initiatives like Meet the Buyer events and the Social Partnership Portal, supported by its Sustainable Procurement Strategy, to connect directly with the local supply chain, citing the Usher Building as a perfect example of this process in action.
