The deep retrofit of the National Retrofit Centre, located within the Built Environment – Smarter Transformation (BE-ST) Innovation Campus, has been shortlisted for The Glasgow Institute of Architects (GIA) Awards in the Sustainability category.
The project, which marks the first phase of the campus's decarbonisation efforts, aims to achieve the stringent International EnerPHit standard and meet the Scottish Net Zero Public Sector Building targets. The work was supported by the Scottish Government’s Public Sector Heat Decarbonisation Fund and delivered by main contractor Clark Contracts.
Gerry Cummins, Director at Clark Contracts, said the firm was delighted with the shortlisting: "Retrofit projects like this are vital as our industry works towards a more sustainable future, and it’s fantastic to see this important work being recognised."
Taking a fabric first approach, the retrofit focused heavily on improving the thermal efficiency of the building envelope. This involved increased insulation and airtightness measures within heated spaces.
Architecturally, the existing curtain walling system was replaced with a new insulated Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) panel system. This innovative system was manufactured directly at BE-ST’s Mass Timber Centre of Excellence, and is complemented by increased roof and floor insulation to dramatically cut the building’s heating demands.
Technologically, the project transitioned the building from a gas-based heating system to a first-of-its-kind zero direct emissions system. This integrated multiple systems, including hybrid heat pump systems supported by a solar PV and thermal array, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery, and energy-efficient lighting and controls.
Gavin Johnston, Associate Director of Collaborative and Commercial Partnerships at BE-ST, emphasised the project's learning value: "This project is a true testament to what can be accomplished when collaboration is at the heart of innovation. Together we have delivered a complex retrofit, learned valuable lessons, and overcome challenges to create a space for the sector to gain essential retrofit training and skills."
The project team collaborated with John Gilbert Architects (JGA), Brown + Wallace, Luths Services, and Narro Associates.
