SP Energy Networks has received planning approval from South Lanarkshire Council to construct a new electricity substation at Redshaw near Douglas, a project deemed essential for strengthening the network in the south of Scotland.
The substation, which will be situated near the former Red Moss Hotel, is designed to increase capacity and strengthen the network to move more clean, green energy to homes and businesses. The current transmission network in the area is soon to be at full capacity, with approximately 2 gigawatts (2GW) of new renewable energy expected to connect to the network in the near future.
The new high-voltage substation is crucial to create sufficient extra network capacity and improve local energy resilience.
SP Energy Networks submitted the application in June following consultation with the local community in the spring. The final scope includes:
• Two new Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) buildings.
• Four 360MVA transformers.
• A new permanent access track and internal roads.
• A 3m high steel palisade security fence.
Andrew Hutchison, Environmental Planning Manager at SP Energy Networks, called the consent a "fantastic milestone" and a great step forward in strengthening the network. He added that the project is part of a wider investment programme "vital to improving our energy security and contributing towards Scotland’s, and the rest of the UK’s, net zero targets."
SP Energy Networks will now work with South Lanarkshire Council’s Roads department to confirm site access and develop a detailed construction management plan. Subject to satisfying these conditions, the company hopes work can begin later this year with a view to completing the project by the end of 2031.
