Scottish Water has been recognised for engineering excellence, winning an award at the 2025 Scottish Civil Engineering Awards. The award, considered the highest honour for engineering in the built environment, was presented for the Craigmaddie Reservoir improvement project, which was delivered by contractor George Leslie Ltd.
The £4.7 million project involved a series of interconnected works to restore the 19th-century reservoir, a vital asset that provides drinking water for over 700,000 people in Greater Glasgow. The improvements focused on enhancing the environment, improving public access, and safeguarding water quality for the future.
Key aspects of the project included a like-for-like replacement of the historic 21.9-metre-long valve tower bridge, using modern materials to extend its lifespan by another 100 years. Safer and more accessible footpaths were also created using sustainable materials.
In addition, over 7,000 cubic metres of silt—enough to fill almost three Olympic swimming pools—was removed from the "Dirty-Dam" to improve service and natural habitats. The project also saw the planting of more than 4,000 trees, shrubs, and flowers to boost biodiversity and enhance the visitor experience.
The project was praised for demonstrating how civil engineering can effectively combine heritage, sustainability, and public benefit, which embodies the spirit of the awards.
