Balfour Beatty has been awarded a place on SP Energy Networks' Strategic Agreement for Overhead Line Works, a major framework supporting the UK's transition to cleaner, more secure power.
The five-year deal, with the option of a further five-year extension, will see Balfour Beatty work alongside seven other contractors to replace and install new 400kV, 275kV and 132kV overhead line conductor systems across Central and Southern Scotland. The systems are essential for transporting electricity over long distances and strengthening the UK’s grid.
The framework is designed to help SP Energy Networks' transmission business deliver the Government's Clean Power 2030 mission – an initiative to unlock capacity for new homes, businesses, and renewable energy projects. It also aims to improve power distribution efficiency, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and boost national energy security.
Tony Wilson, Managing Director of Balfour Beatty's Power Transmission and Distribution business, said: "We're proud to be a part of this strategic framework, which recognises our proven expertise in delivering complex overhead line projects and our track record of successful delivery in Scotland.
"Through the framework, we will work closely and collaboratively with SP Energy Networks transmission business and our local supply chain partners to ensure a stable and resilient electricity supply across Central and Southern Scotland, whilst also leaving a lasting, positive legacy for local communities through our commitment to providing numerous local employment opportunities."
Guy Jefferson, Managing Director of Transmission at SP Energy Networks, added: "We're pleased to have Balfour Beatty and their expertise working alongside us as we lead the charge in helping deliver the UK Government's Clean Power 2030 ambition.
"Our strategic partnerships give suppliers confidence to invest in their business – growing workforces across the country and creating even greater opportunities for the UK."
