SSEN Transmission has submitted a marine licence application for the Scottish marine elements of the Eastern Green Link 3 (EGL3) project.
The project, a joint venture with National Grid Electricity Transmission, is one of the biggest electricity transmission projects in the UK.
The application, submitted to the Marine Directorate – Licensing Operations Team (MD-LOT), covers the installation and operation of the subsea cable in Scottish waters and where the cable meets land. This milestone follows years of development, including extensive engagement with marine users and other stakeholders to ensure minimal impact on the marine environment.
James Johnson, EGL3 Project Director, said the team had "worked closely with local communities" in preparing the application and thanked all those who provided feedback. He added that they now look forward to working with the MD-LOT team throughout the determination process.
Once complete, EGL3 will be a critical part of the UK's future electricity transmission infrastructure, helping to connect more clean, renewable power to the GB electricity grid. A determination from the MD-LOT is expected within the next twelve months.
