A major road repair project on Menzies Road in Bathgate has been completed ahead of schedule and within budget, West Lothian Council has confirmed.
The essential works, which began in mid-summer, involved extensive reconstruction of the carriageway structure on this key town centre route. Menzies Road provides access to three major supermarkets, two nurseries, and a primary school, making it a vital part of Bathgate's transport network.
The project included the removal and replacement of deep structural road layers that had shown significant deterioration. Additional work involved replacing five raised table speed-reducing measures, applying high-friction surfacing at controlled crossings, repainting road markings, and refurbishing a pelican crossing. Drainage and manhole ironwork were also renewed.
Although the repairs were originally scheduled to take up to six weeks, favourable weather conditions, seven-day working, and the efforts of council staff meant the project was completed in just three weeks.
A council spokesperson explained that while time is always factored in for delays due to bad weather or unforeseen ground conditions, in this case, inspections revealed that the underlying damage was less severe than expected. The consistent good weather also helped avoid delays.
The newly resurfaced Menzies Road is now fully open to traffic.
