A team of nine volunteers from SSEN Transmission's Crossaig electricity substation project rolled up their sleeves this week to tackle shoreline litter at Dalintober Harbour in Campbeltown, removing 185kg of waste.
The group, which included staff from SSEN Transmission and their Principal Contractor BAM, joined forces with local environmental group Kintyre Coastal Network (KCN) for the beach clean. Among the rubbish collected were washed-up tyres, discarded fishing gear, and even traffic cones, debris that poses a serious risk to local wildlife and the marine ecosystem.
The clean-up was part of SSEN Transmission's ongoing commitment to community engagement and environmental stewardship, with the Crossaig team temporarily trading their hard hats and tools for litter pickers and bin bags.
Ali Awada, Project Manager for SSEN Transmission, said: "Our volunteers were keen to make a positive impact, and they’ve done exactly that. This initiative reflects our shared responsibility to protect the beautiful coastal areas we work alongside.
"We're proud to play our part in looking after the coastline near our Crossaig substation project. When we heard that Kintyre Coastal Network needed a helping hand to clear litter from Dalintober Harbour our volunteers were keen to help however they could. Our team showed real enthusiasm, and the results speak for themselves—over 185kg of waste removed and a cleaner harbour for all."
Dalintober Harbour, renowned for its scenic views and maritime heritage, is a popular local destination, and the efforts were welcomed by both residents and environmental groups.
The Crossaig Substation currently under construction is a key part of SSEN Transmission’s 275kV Argyll and Kintyre Reinforcement project. It will replace the aging 132kV facility and enable greater renewable energy capacity to be transported from the Argyll peninsula, improving energy security and supporting Scotland’s net zero ambitions.
