£3m Wildlife Restoration Project Takes Root In Cumbernauld

Construction News Image
Cumbernauld's urban landscape is poised for a significant transformation following the green light and nearly £3 million in funding for a new five-year wildlife restoration project.

Titled 'Nurturing Natural Connections', the initiative promises extensive tree planting and wildflower sowing, aiming to revitalise the town’s green heart.

The ambitious project has secured a substantial £2.62 million from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, building upon the previous successes of the 'Creating Natural Connections' programme. It will be delivered through the Cumbernauld Living Landscape initiative, a collaborative effort led by the Scottish Wildlife Trust, in partnership with North Lanarkshire Council, The Conservation Volunteers, and Sanctuary Scotland.

Central to 'Nurturing Natural Connections' is the active involvement of local volunteers, placing the Cumbernauld community at the forefront of protecting and restoring their urban green spaces. Planned works include the management of over 330 hectares of woodland, the enhancement of more than 20 hectares of wildflower meadows, and the removal of invasive non-native species that threaten Cumbernauld's indigenous wildlife.

Beyond its ecological benefits, the project will champion the profound health advantages that nature offers. Through trauma-informed practice, it will demonstrate how engagement with the natural environment can significantly aid recovery and bolster both mental and physical well-being.

Tracy Lambert, Cumbernauld Living Landscape Project Manager at the Scottish Wildlife Trust, reflected on the town's natural heritage. "From the bluebell displays of Cumbernauld Glen to the river woodlands of Luggiebank, Cumbernauld is home to so much incredible wildlife. Sadly however, much of it is in poor condition and needs a helping hand," she noted. "For over ten years, we've proudly worked alongside local communities to restore the town's green spaces, and we're excited to begin our next chapter with Nurturing Natural Connections."

The project also aims to leave a lasting social legacy by upskilling local people through advanced training and delivering citizen science projects that will directly support North Lanarkshire Council's Local Biodiversity Action Plan. Furthermore, it is set to create six full-time jobs and six trainee opportunities throughout its duration.

Crucially, this restoration effort will also bolster the town's infrastructure by advocating for green infrastructure within Community Growth Areas and in the planned redevelopment of the town centre. It will implement vital nature-based solutions to tackle contemporary challenges such as flooding, drought, and wildfires, enhancing the town's resilience.

"We've seen the devastation caused by the nature and climate crises first-hand here in Cumbernauld, particularly with the recent storms and wildfires. However, we've also seen how powerful nature can be in helping us recover," Ms Lambert added. "By implementing nature-based solutions to some of today's biggest challenges, we can build a town that thrives in tandem with the natural environment."

Eilish McGuinness, Chief Executive of The National Lottery Heritage Fund, hailed the project as a transformative step for Cumbernauld. "This is a game changing project for Cumbernauld. With nearly £3 million funding thanks to National Lottery players, the Nurturing Natural Connections project is set to transform the town's vital green spaces and places — connecting the community to nature and natural heritage on the doorstep," she stated. "It's about creating a thriving, greener Cumbernauld — now and for generations to come."

The project's delivery will commence this month and is scheduled for completion in June 2030, promising a brighter, greener future for Cumbernauld.
