Visitors to Cumbernauld are set to notice a significant change in the town centre as the demolition of Fleming House rapidly approaches completion. This critical undertaking marks the initial phase of North Lanarkshire Council's ambitious 15-year plan to comprehensively regenerate the town centre.
The top-down removal of both wings of the former office building, located next to the A8011 and Tryst Road, has now been successfully finished. Kilsyth-based contractor Beattie Demolition has spearheaded the work, employing advanced robotic equipment to safely clear key areas, enabling the deployment of high-reach demolition rigs for the remainder of the structure.
Mackenzie Beattie of Beattie Demolition highlighted the project's strong commitment to sustainability. "This method has helped us clear these key areas safely, making it possible to bring in the high-reach demolition rig to continue with the rest of the building," he explained. "The materials from the demolition are being sorted and recycled. So far, over 1,200 tonnes have been taken off-site. This will be turned into recycled sand and clean 10/20mm stone chips, which will be reused in local building projects—helping the project to meet sustainability targets and cut down on environmental impact." He added that, including materials recovered during the soft strip phase, an impressive 94% of all waste is currently being recycled.
The demolition of Fleming House signals the commencement of wider transformative plans for Cumbernauld. The Centre Cumbernauld shopping centre is also slated for demolition, making way for the development of new education, health, community, and leisure facilities, alongside crucial public transport improvements.
Council Leader Councillor Jim Logue expressed enthusiasm for the project's progress. "Our vision for Cumbernauld aims to deliver a town centre, which will drive a new sense of place and community ownership," he said. "The demolition of Fleming House signals the start of our ambitious plans for the transformation of Cumbernauld Town Centre – it's great to see that this first phase of work is nearing completion."
