Essential ground investigation work is continuing on the hillside above the A83 at the Rest and Be Thankful, necessitating temporary traffic diversions onto the Old Military Road (OMR). These crucial construction works are vital for ongoing efforts to enhance the resilience of this key Argyll and Bute route.
The intensive investigation programme will require the A83 to be closed, with traffic diverted onto the OMR, between 08:00 and 18:00 on Sunday, 23 June and Monday, 24 June. Further diversions are scheduled for Sunday, 30 June and Monday, 1 July. These daylight closures are implemented to ensure the safety of the workforce carrying out complex operations on the steep hillside.
The ground investigations involve the deployment of significant plant and personnel, including large cranes and ancillary equipment. These cranes are essential for lifting specialist drilling equipment onto the hillside and will require the full width of the A83 carriageway to operate safely.
Transport Scotland acknowledges that these diversions may cause frustration for local communities, businesses, and road users, but highlights their necessity for maintaining safety for both the public and the construction teams. They have committed to working with the ground investigation contractor to complete the work as quickly as possible, exploring all feasible options to minimise the number of diversions required.
These ongoing investigations form a critical part of the long-term strategy for the A83, aiming to inform future solutions for the route's stability and reliability. Transport Scotland has thanked local communities and road users for their continued cooperation as these vital construction works progress.
