Work is expected to commence this summer on the site for the new Mayfield Community Learning Campus, following Midlothian Council's appointment of Kier as the main contractor.
The £41.8 million project is expected to complete its construction phase by spring 2027, with the overall campus fully operational later that year.
The ambitious development will see the demolition of existing buildings to make way for a modern, integrated campus. This new facility will incorporate Mayfield Primary School, St Luke's RC Primary School, nursery (early learning), additional support needs (ASN) provisions, and extensive community facilities.
Beyond the educational spaces, the campus plans include a range of outdoor and indoor amenities for wider community use. These feature a grass seven-a-side football pitch, a full-sized 3G football pitch, a basketball court, a community growing space, community meeting rooms, workspaces, and library facilities. The new campus will accommodate up to 701 pupils across denominational and non-denominational settings, with dedicated spaces for 24 children with additional support needs and an expanded nursery capable of taking 100 children from two years old.
Councillor Ellen Scott, Midlothian Council's Cabinet Member for Education, highlighted the dual purpose of the project: "While the schools will be the heart of this project, our aim is to build an outstanding facility that will also serve the wider community."
The project forms part of the Learning Estate Investment Programme and benefits from funding support from the Scottish Government. Councillor Scott added: "This is a significant and timely investment in the future of the Mayfield community. We're looking forward to welcoming local people and children into a well-designed, modern and inspiring building that responds to the needs of young learners while expanding opportunities for improved health, wellbeing and the local economy."
Phil McDowell, regional director for Kier Construction North & Scotland, expressed the firm's commitment: "We're pleased to be working once again with Midlothian Council to deliver the new Mayfield Community Learning Campus. Drawing on our strong track record in building high-quality schools, we'll create a modern, inclusive environment for over 700 pupils complete with a wide range of community uses."
McDowell also detailed Kier's approach to the construction process: "This project marks a major step forward for Mayfield. We've also developed a careful site preparation strategy to minimise disruption to nearby residents, reusing materials on site to reduce waste and traffic coming in and out of the site. The end result will be a valuable resource for learning, wellbeing and community life for years to come."
