Statera Energy has achieved a significant milestone for its Kintore Hydrogen project, securing a resolution to grant planning permission from Aberdeenshire Council.
This development paves the way for what is set to be the UK’s largest green hydrogen project.
The Kintore Hydrogen initiative is projected to create thousands of jobs and inject £400 million into the Aberdeenshire economy. Over its lifecycle, the project is anticipated to deliver £1 billion in economic benefits to the wider UK economy, supporting economic growth and contributing to a just transition for the UK’s major industrial clusters.
Described as a groundbreaking project for the UK energy system and Statera’s largest consented project to date, Kintore Hydrogen aims to produce green hydrogen at scale and at the lowest possible cost to consumers. The facility will utilise surplus renewable energy from Scottish wind farms that might otherwise be curtailed (turned off due to grid limitations). This approach is expected to save billions in wind curtailment costs while also delivering significant carbon savings.
The first 500MW of operational capacity at the Kintore Hydrogen facility is anticipated to be online by 2030. The green hydrogen produced will play a crucial role in decarbonising the UK's carbon-intensive sectors, including heavy industry and flexible power generation. Furthermore, the project will facilitate long-duration energy storage and enhance the UK's overall energy security.
