A collaborative campaign, "Moving the Grid Forward", has been launched by the three companies responsible for Britain's electricity transmission network – SP Energy Networks, National Grid Electricity Transmission, and Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks – alongside the Energy Networks Association (ENA).
The initiative aims to highlight the critical importance of developing a national energy network capable of meeting the increasing demands of a digital world and facilitating a transition to an all-electric future.
SP Energy Networks manages the transmission network in Central and Southern Scotland, while Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks oversee the remainder of Scotland's network. National Grid Electricity Transmission owns and operates the network in England and Wales.
As transmission owners, these companies are tasked with ensuring that electricity generated across the country can be efficiently transported to homes and businesses. With electricity demand projected to double by 2050, the existing grid requires a significant overhaul – the largest since its creation – to adapt to a modern, flexible, and greener energy system. This upgrade is also seen as crucial in helping the UK achieve self-sufficiency in domestically produced, affordable energy.
The campaign emphasises that the UK currently relies on expensive imported fuels for electricity generation. However, a developed and resilient grid would unlock the potential of UK renewable energy sources, enabling the transportation of clean power for future generations. With Britain possessing a substantial 40% of Europe's wind energy potential, the campaign argues that significant opportunities exist, although challenges remain, including reforms needed within the current planning system.
The investment and focused effort required to build a future-proof grid are also presented as key drivers for economic growth and for reinforcing the UK's leading international position in clean energy, evidenced by its status as having the second-largest offshore wind fleet globally.
To effectively communicate the benefits of creating a future-facing grid, the "Moving the Grid Forward" public information campaign will feature ongoing advertisements and an online resource providing further details.
