Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) is continuing to expand its Flexibility Service Markets, having accepted over 100 MW of capacity. The energy provider has also launched a new contracting opportunity for businesses to participate in these evolving markets.
Flexibility, in the context of electricity networks, refers to the ability to adjust the timing and location of electricity generation and consumption. As the uptake of low-carbon technologies like electric vehicles, solar panels, and heat pumps increases, alongside distributed energy resources, flexibility is crucial for managing network constraints and supporting the smart grid technologies necessary for a cost-effective transition to net zero emissions.
SSEN has already achieved key milestones outlined in its Flexibility Roadmap, including the launch of the new ElectronConnect market platform, the introduction of month-ahead markets, and the definition of local flexibility requirements. These developments have led to Overarching Agreements being signed with 23 different companies.
The latest opportunity to sign a contract, enabling participation in all future bidding rounds, is now open from 7 April to 23 April 2025. The next long-term bidding round, scheduled for May, is expected to cover flexibility requirements in 76 different areas across SSEN's North and South network regions.
Catherine Winning, Flexibility Market Manager at SSEN, commented: "We're delighted with the progress on market development we have made at SSEN made over the last year. This development allows different approaches to participate at different times with both long- and short-term markets being available in different locations."
The ElectronConnect platform is streamlining the market entry process for Flexibility Service Providers (FSPs). This three-year partnership is playing a significant role in facilitating the transition to net zero across SSEN's operating areas in central southern England and the north of Scotland.
