Construction began on Monday (31 March 2025) on a new development set to deliver 19 much-needed wheelchair-accessible homes for social rent in the Newington area of Edinburgh city centre.
Contractor CCG (Scotland) commenced work at the Cowan's Close site on behalf of The City of Edinburgh Council, with completion anticipated by summer 2026. The project, designed by architects Anderson Bell + Christie, specifically addresses the shortage of wheelchair-adapted accommodation in a central location.
The homes will incorporate significant energy-efficient features, including CCG's ‘iQ' Timber System providing enhanced thermal insulation, low U-value windows, NIBE exhaust air source heat pumps for zero-emissions heating and hot water, and solar PV panels.
Councillor Lezley Marion Cameron, Housing, Homelessness and Fair Work Convener, commented on the project's importance amidst the city's housing challenges: "As we continue to face an ongoing housing emergency in Edinburgh, the need for affordable, accessible, and larger family homes has never been more urgent. The city is experiencing a severe shortage of housing options that meet the diverse needs of our residents, particularly those with disabilities and those who require the use of a wheelchair."
She added: "The development at Cowan's Close is part of our efforts to address the housing crisis. These new homes represent a significant investment in the future of the city's housing landscape and our commitment to ensure families with specific needs have access to safe, sustainable, and affordable accommodation."
CCG Managing Director, David Wylie, said: "We are delighted to have commenced construction at Cowan's Close. The project is another great example of how The City of Edinburgh Council and CCG are working collaboratively to address the demand for new, affordable homes in the city, and it will be a much welcome addition to the Newington community upon completion next year."
Throughout the construction phase, CCG plans to deliver community benefits including creating 5 new jobs, offering 6 work placements, conducting 4 career events with local schools, and providing £7,000 in local investment.
