The Nelson Monument, one of Edinburgh's most iconic landmarks, is set to temporarily close for essential refurbishment works.
The closure will allow for the inspection and restoration of the monument's external walls and windows, the installation of new internal lighting, and the reinstallation of the historic Timeball mechanism.
Councillor Val Walker, Culture and Communities Convener, said: "We are excited to embark on this next stage of the important refurbishment of the Nelson Monument, ensuring that both the iconic structure and its fascinating history continue to be celebrated for generations to come."
The Timeball, added in 1853 by Charles Piazzi Smyth, Astronomer Royal for Scotland, was once a vital tool for ships navigating the Firth of Forth and Port of Leith.
The monument offers stunning panoramic views of the city and houses an exhibition showcasing the life and achievements of Piazzi Smyth, a renowned astronomer, photographer, and Egyptologist.
The Nelson Monument is expected to reopen to the public in July 2025.
