SPEN, the electricity network operator serving communities across Scotland, England and Wales, has published its inaugural Just Transition Annual Report. The report outlines the company's progress towards its ambitious goal of achieving a just and sustainable energy transition.
"Our vision is to be a sustainable networks business that delivers for our communities and workforce across our network areas – all the way from Anstruther to Anglesey," said Eddie Mulholland, SPEN Director of Processes and Technology.
Recognising the social and economic impacts of the transition to a low-carbon economy, SPEN has embedded four core principles within its Just Transition strategy:
• Reducing its own carbon footprint: Walking the talk by minimising its environmental impact
• Supporting all customers: Ensuring fair and equitable access to the benefits of the energy transition for all customers, especially the most vulnerable
• Empowering communities: Actively engaging with and empowering communities to participate in the transition
• Investing in its workforce: Creating a positive and fair working environment by providing training and development opportunities
The report highlights various initiatives undertaken by SPEN, including:
• Workforce development programs: Enhancing employee skills and creating opportunities for career progression within the evolving energy landscape
• Community engagement initiatives: Supporting local net-zero projects and actively involving communities in decision-making processes
• Supply chain sustainability initiatives: Encouraging and supporting its supply chain to adopt more sustainable practices
"A transformation like this takes a huge amount of time and effort, and we can’t do it alone," stated Mulholland. "Collaboration is key – with colleagues, customers, communities, governments, partners, stakeholders, and suppliers."
SPEN emphasises that the Just Transition is a collective effort and that continued collaboration is crucial to achieving a successful and equitable transition to a cleaner energy future for all.
