Network Rail has successfully completed a £3.2 million investment programme to upgrade the West Highland Line. The four-day project, which ran from Saturday, 09 November, to the early hours of Wednesday, 13 November, involved extensive track renewals, structural repairs, and drainage improvements between Craigendoran and Crianlarich.
Key works included:
• Track Renewal: Over a mile of track was replaced at various locations, including Craigendoran and between Helensburgh Upper and Glen Falloch.
• Switch and Crossing Replacement: Vital components at Craigendoran were replaced to ensure smooth train operations.
• Bridge Refurbishment: The bridge at Garelochhead underwent a major overhaul, involving steelwork repairs and repainting.
• Geotechnical Inspections: Specialist engineers assessed the condition of the railway's foundations.
To minimise disruption to passengers, replacement bus services were provided during the line closure. The successful completion of this project will improve the reliability and performance of the West Highland Line, benefiting both passengers and freight operators.
Ross Moran, Network Rail Scotland route director, said: "This vital work will help improve performance and reliability for our customers.
"Our engineers have worked around-the-clock to complete these projects quickly, with as little disruption as possible, and we thank our passengers and freight customers for their understanding while this crucial investment took place."
