New Glasgow Liveable Neighbourhoods In Development

Glasgow City Council has announced the appointment of two consultants to undertake the work to develop a second set of Liveable Neighbourhoods in the city.

The consultants will deliver early-stage work aimed at transforming communities into safer, more attractive spaces where everyday needs can be met locally.

Funded by a Connecting Communities grant from Sustrans Scotland Places for Everyone programme, Liveable Neighbourhoods will be developed in four areas of the city as part of the wider programme's second tranche of work:

• Mansewood to Shawlands

• Pollokshields East to Gorbals

• Royston to Hogganfield

• Yoker to Whiteinch

The consultants, Atkins and Mott MacDonald will each take forward the development of two Liveable Neighbourhoods by looking at interventions already in scope and engaging with residents to identify new ideas for neighbourhood improvements that reflect what they would like to see within their communities.

The climate crisis and recent pandemic have brought to the fore the importance of local public space. As a key element of Glasgow's Transport Strategy our Liveable Neighbourhoods Programme is seeking to reduce car reliance by advancing a network of accessible and revitalised neighbourhoods with enhanced public spaces and attractive green infrastructure.

At the heart of developing Liveable Neighbourhoods in Glasgow are residents who have been participating in activities to identify an array of neighbourhood improvements that reflect the needs of their communities - some of which will progress to construction, subject to future funding availability. This participative process started last year with the publication of our Liveable Neighbourhoods Liveable Neighbourhoods Toolkit and subsequent in-person and online engagement with communities.

Following immersive engagement with residents of the four emerging Liveable Neighbourhoods which will involve a mix of online and in-person activities - a shortlist of potential interventions for each area will go forward for further design development.

Cllr Angus Millar, City Convener for Climate and Transport said: "Our Liveable Neighbourhoods approach is about looking at Glasgow street-by-street, community-by-community, and finding ways to better connect and improve our local areas so that residents can have their day-to-day needs met within a short distance of their home.

"The appointment of consultants to collectively deliver early-stage work in these four neighbourhoods is hugely positive and means that work will start soon with local communities with the aim of creating safer, people-friendly streets that support active travel for everyday journeys as well as encouraging patronage of local shops and businesses."

The Liveable Neighbourhoods Programme is Glasgow's approach to blending the 20-minute neighbourhood concept with the place principle to respond to the current environmental, social, health and economic challenges the city faces. Through six tranches of work, the programme will reach into all areas of the city.

Development of this latest set of Liveable Neighbourhoods, follows on from tranche one early-stage work that has led to the first five Liveable Neighbourhoods starting to take shape at Ruchill to Cowlairs, Langside to Toryglen, Yorkhill to Anderston, Dennistoun to Cranhill and Govan to Kingston.
