Inverclyde and West Dunbartonshire councils have announced that they are to appoint a new joint head of roads and transportation to work across both areas.
The chief officer will be the strategic and operational lead for the two separate services.
Inverclyde Council Leader Councillor Stephen McCabe said: "The new head of service will allow both councils to collaborate together more cohesively.
"We are clearly close neighbours and this will allow us to develop strategic business plans for both councils and to align working practices and policies to deliver better value.
"It will also give both councils the opportunity to develop bids for external funding."
Services will remain within their respective councils but collaboration will be on the basis of voluntary agreements among staff and not involve a formalised shared
service.
Over a period of time the post may be widened to include strategic leadership of other front line services including waste, ground maintenance, cemeteries and fleet across the two councils.
