Midlothian Council has revealed its carbon emissions have been cut by 31% between 2013 and 2016.
At a meeting on Tuesday, 12 October, the local authority heard it had exceeded its Carbon Management Plan for 2013 – 2016, which targeted a drop of 25%
Measures which have helped reduce CO2 output include energy efficient street lighting, the introduction of a food waste collection service, energy efficient buildings, and electric council vehicles. Work is now underway to draw up a new Carbon Management Plan.
Cllr Derek Rosie said the reduction is a "major achievement" for the council.
"Taking advantage of national schemes to insulate council homes, introducing LED street lighting programmes and using electric vehicles, among other measures, we've smashed our target. Well done to everyone involved."
