Midlothian Council has secured a £3.4 million grant to boost communities through the LEADER programme.
The scheme is a rural grant fund and part of the Scottish Rural Development Fund.
The council will use the funding to run the Tyne Esk LEADER programme throughout Midlothian and East Lothian (excluding Dalkeith and Musselburgh).
A Local Development Strategy (LDS), led by the local authority with support from the Local Action Group (LAG), has been approved by the Scottish Government.
The LDS was formed via consultations with communities, businesses and organisations within the Tyne Esk area.
Some of the key issues identified included:
• Local environment improvements such as signage, improved streetscapes and improved green spaces.
• Traffic calming and transport issues.
• Proposals for community hubs/shops/gardens.
• Lack of activities for families and children.
• The need for more local employment opportunities.
Community groups, local agencies and organisations are now being encouraged to apply for funding to develop project ideas.
Andrew McDonald, the Chairman Tyne Esk LEADER LAG, said: "This programme will welcome applications for as many projects as possible that will fit our priorities and should bring much-needed jobs and added prosperity to our rural areas."
