West Dunbartonshire Councillors have approved an 'action plan' to transform Dumbarton Rock.
Proposals have also been drawn up for the town's waterfront.
A four day consultation funded by the Scottish Government identified 22 priority improvement projects in February.
Local people, businesses, landowners and other interested parties provided their input into the proposals, with a particular focus on how to promote the area as a tourist destination.
The projects include:
• Creating a new waterfront path to connect the Rock and Castle with the town centre.
• Investigating the possibility of introducing a multi-use facility at the base of the Rock and Castle which could provide community facilities such as a café and exhibition space.
• Provide coach and car parking facilities in and around the Rock and Castle to encourage increased visitor numbers.
• Enhance the public areas close to the Rock and Castle and the approach from Castle Road.
• Improve the rock climbing area at the Rock.
• Complete the Castle improvement plan which aims to improve the overall visitor experience.
• Investigate the feasibility of installing floodlights to illuminate the Rock and Castle.
Councillor Patrick McGlinchey said: "It is fantastic that we are now moving to the next stage of this process as we look to deliver improvements in Dumbarton that will benefit the whole area. The Charrette gave us the opportunity to engage with people from throughout the community as we aimed to develop a shared long-term vision for Dumbarton Rock and its setting."
Councillor David McBride added: "This action plan will be delivered over the next five years with the support of other agencies, such as Historic Scotland and the Castle Society."
