A local landmark in the Highland is to be demolished as part of the first phase of a regeneration scheme.
The former Dornoch abattoir, which has been renamed as the Dornoch South development site, is set to be demolished. Having been constructed on a site near the town centre in the 1970s, the abattoir ceased trading in 2010 and the site has lain empty ever since. As a result, the condition of the buildings has deteriorated.
Following a consultation exercise with local community development group, the Dornoch Area Community Interest Company (DACIC), owners ANM Group, Highland Council and Highlands and Islands Enterprise, a masterplan was drawn up to identify suitable future uses for the site.
It was then decided to demolish the former abattoir and replace it with a mixed-use development.
Earlier this week, work commenced on the first phase of the redevelopment project with workers starting to demolish the abattoir buildings. When the buildings are razed to the ground, decontamination work will commence before the site will be transformed into a mixed-use project, potentially including residential, retail and community spaces.
Jenifer Cameron, Chair, Dornoch Area Community Interest Company, said: "There will be delight and relief in Dornoch that redevelopment of this important site is underway. It creates an important opportunity for our town to have new and exciting initiatives so close to the town centre."
Pete Guthrie, Head of Strengthening Communities from HIE, added: "It is a landmark moment for the local community that the first stage of the regeneration of this site is beginning with the demolition of the existing buildings. The masterplan outlines some exciting opportunities which will add to the vibrancy of the town."
