Work to upgrade footpaths in the Clickimin area of Lerwick, Shetland, is underway.
The paths, located on the west side of Clickimin Loch and around Clickimin rugby pitch have now been closed to pedestrians to allow work to commence. The route that is closed includes southwards, from North Lochside to the athletics track; and northwards, from Westerloch to the athletics track. Users have been asked to use an alternative route.
A total of £507,500 of funding has been provided to the Shetland Islands Council from Sustrans Scotland's Community Links programme for the works. The money will allow the footpaths leading to Clickimin to be widened to three metres and resurfaced with tarmac, for shared use by pedestrians and cyclists. Streetlighting will also be installed along the footpaths.
The local authority has confirmed a footpath on the east side of the Clickimin Loch, beside the football pitches, remains open for the time being, but is also due to be upgraded in the coming months.
Contractors are now on site and the works are expected to last around three months.
