West Lothian Council has said there are still vacancies on a number of construction programmes at West Lothian College. The courses, which commence in August, cater for different entry levels, including:
• National Certificate: Built Environment (as a full-time or part-time option course), which provides direct access to the Higher National Certificate Construction Management course.
• Introduction to Carpentry and Joinery (full-time).
• Advanced Craft Carpentry and Joiner (full-time).
George Hotchkiss, assistant principal of West Lothian College, said: "The construction industry is a growing sector offering rewarding career opportunities for apprentices and graduates with entry at all levels. Companies are reporting skills shortages in these areas, and we are contributing to meet these needs. The College has strong links with companies who can provide work placements and apprenticeship opportunities, and also with universities for articulation to 2nd or 3rd year degree courses.
"We have expanded our courses and facilities in Construction and Engineering to meet the demands of our community and industry. Earlier this year we started a £1.1 million investment programme, supported by the Scottish Funding Council, which will see significant extensions campus development including the construction of a 325 square metre multi-purpose workshop extension with state-of-the-art facilities. The work is well underway and is expected to be completed in the autumn."
The improvements include an integrated staff workroom and three new teaching spaces. A canopy is also to be installed in the motor vehicle workshop yard to provide cover for students when working outdoors.
