Plans to carry out significant infrastructure improvements to Campbeltown harbour have been approved by Argyll and Bute Council.
Members of the committee have also agreed to provide more than £1m towards the project.
The work will see improvements made to berthing on the site, as well as on-shore improvements to help transform the marina into an attractive sailing destination.
Throughout the design process, the project team behind the plans have consulted with the local community. The proposals have received wide support and will include a new pontoon layout with 54 berths. Ten of these will be located at finger pontoons, 28 alongside berths and an additional 16 berths by rafting. As a result of the changes, the main leg will be shortened to bring the berthing more in to the sheltered side of the quay, while the addition of an angled concrete breakwater will help to protect the more northerly berths. Regarding the new on-shore facility, it will include female, male and family toilets and showers, and aims to create a more attractive and contemporary offer for visitors and boat users.
A tender process for a contractor and operator, as an alternative to the council who will manage the facility if a suitable operator cannot be found, will now commence. If successful, it is hoped work will commence towards the end of this year and completed by Spring 2015.
