New Sports Facilities For Liberton High School

Three newly refurbished tennis courts have been officially opened at Liberton High School in Edinburgh.

The facilities have been upgraded following £50,000 funding from the Legacy 2014 Active Places Fund, administered by sportscotland, as well as grants from Tennis Scotland, East of Scotland Tennis, Active Schools and the LHSA.

Local construction companies also donated materials free of charge.

In addition to the courts being opened, the school also officially unveiled its new 1.5km bike trail.

Welcoming the investments, Head teacher at Liberton High School, Stephen Kelly, said: "The tennis courts and bike trail will benefit everyone in the community as we try to get more and more people to embrace sport and healthy lifestyles.

"Many of the comments we have from families and children themselves is that there is nothing on for them in the area, so we are trying very hard to change this culture and give everyone direct access to the sports."

Councillor Paul Godzik, Education Convener for the City of Edinburgh Council, added: "This is a really big year for sport in Scotland with the Commonwealth Games taking centre stage and providing a fantastic opportunity for our children to be inspired by sportsmen and women from all four corners of the globe.

"Great facilities like these at Liberton can only be a benefit as we try to get our children and local community fit and active."

The Legacy 2014 Active Places Fund is a £10m investment from the Scottish Government to enable local communities to build, upgrade or refurbish facilities.
