A number of houses which have been constructed on a former coal mine in Midlothian are at risk of demolition.
This is because carbon dioxide has been discovered seeping into the properties, the local authority has confirmed. As a result, officials are recommending that the 64 homes – located on the Newbyres Crescent estate in Gorebridge – should be demolished. A special gas membrane would then need to be installed at the site, with plans to rebuild the development afterwards.
A council meeting is expected to be held next week (17 June) where Councillors will make their decision. If the demolition plans are approved, those living in the properties would be relocated elsewhere for up to six months.
A spokesperson for Midlothian Council said: "We are exploring a number of options, and this work will accelerate once the detail around the final choice on what work will be happening is clear."
