Graham Construction has been awarded a second contract in the £100m Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) Station Refurbishment Programme.
The programme, which is part of a Subway Modernisation Stations and Accessibility work stream, will see all 15 stations across the system being refurbished.
The £5.3m contact at St Enochs will take the same high quality approach as the previous stations to ensure a clean, efficient and passenger-friendly environment is created.
Work will involve the replacement of materials to floors, walls and ceilings throughout the stations. Wayfinding, information and general signage for passengers will also be improved by rationalising signing in line with current branding, upgrading passenger facilities and equipment, increasing visibility and use of more efficient lighting. In addition, there will be a wide range of DDA enhancements and, for the first time for the subway, lifts will be installed in the station. This will provide accessibility from the city centre to a key interchange at Govan with Fastlink and the bus station.
A new station office also will be built and will be combined with the Travel Centre making optimum use of space within the station. Furthermore, two new station entrance canopies will be constructed of glass and steel increasing station visibility and enhancing the image of the Subway. Work on the 15-month contract is due to start shortly.
