The second phase of streetscape works is to begin today (13 January) in Wishaw town centre.
As a result, Stewarton Street will be closed to traffic. North Lanarkshire Council has said The Cross will remain open and the traffic lights will be amended to take into account the closure and maintain traffic flow at Kirk Road and Caledonian Road.
Continuing from the phase one project in Main Street, this project will see work carried out on the East Cross, Stewarton Street, Caledonian Road, Kirk Road, lower Main Street and the West Cross.
MacLay Civil Engineering Ltd has been appointed to carry out the work. It will include creating wider pavements, parking bays, new street furniture and lighting, removing the high step between the road and pavements and resurfacing the road. The project will also remove barriers to those with mobility issues, increase lighting levels to help improve community safety, and replace the damaged roadway and footpaths.
Construction will be carried out in separate stages so as to minimise disruption.
The project is scheduled to be completed by March 2015.
Commenting on the plans, Councillor James Coyle, Convener of the Planning and Transportation Committee, said: "Last year the council approved a further £3.5 million of investment in Wishaw town centre for phase 2 of the streetscape project and other public realm works, and I'm delighted this is now starting.
"This will deliver more improvements for the town which will benefit retailers, residents, shoppers and visitors, helping to give the town centre a viable future."
