Construction work has now started on 14 new council homes in Airdrie, North Lanarkshire.
The homes are being built on the site of the former Albert Primary School.
The project, costing £1.3m and carried out by North Lanarkshire council, will see two bedroom cottage flats being delivered by affordable housing developer Lovell.
Work is expected to be completed on site by late spring 2014.
The school, which closed in 2006, was situated on the corner of North Biggar Road and Flowerhill Street. It also forms part of the Drumgelloch conservation area.
All the properties are energy efficient and are designed to be easily adaptable for tenants with disabilities.
In addition to the above properties, North Lanarkshire Council is also planning a further 90 new homes in the Monklands area up until 2017/18 as part of the £150m 'Building for the Future' programme to create 1,000 new homes across the authority area by 2020.
Councillor Sam Love, Convener of Housing and Social Work said: "It's great to see work underway on this new site and I look forward to welcoming our new tenants into the homes in the new year.
"This site was of course the former primary school and we are hoping to use some of the original sandstone from the building in the landscaping of this project.
"It is good to see the redevelopment taking place in an area within the heart of the community and helping to meet local housing needs.
"We are looking forward to completing the additional sites as the programme develops and we continue to invest in improving all our housing stock."
The Scottish Government is contributing more than £400,000 towards the development costs of the Albert Primary School site project.
