Argyll and Bute Council has welcomed the news that individuals struggling to get onto the property market will have access to a government-led scheme which will provide help for home buyers.
At a council meeting last week, it was revealed that the Local Authority Mortgage Scheme (LAMS), which is an initiative a number of local authorities have been considering, is unlikely to proceed. The announcement follows the launch of a government scheme which is to be supported by banking groups.
As a result, the council's housing service will now let provide people information about the government scheme. LAMS only offered assistance to first-time buyers, but this new scheme will also provide support for other prospective purchasers.
Council Leader Dick Walsh said: "Although the LAMS initiative is unlikely to come to fruition, it is important that people in Argyll and Bute know that they can still access support through this national scheme.
"This is likely to be a robust and effective way of providing assistance to people who may be struggling to move up the property ladder. We welcome the scheme and look forward to seeing how it performs. Our housing team will make sure that people who had enquired about LAMS are made aware of the options available to them."
