A £140,000 project that will improve pavements, junctions and parking in Kirkintilloch Town Centre is to commence later this month.
East Dunbartonshire Council added that the work is being carried out as part of the Kirkintilloch Town Centre Masterplan, and will see the Townhead area of the town upgraded throughout the 12-week programme.
Work is due to begin on Monday 26 August and last until the end of November. During this time, 10 parallel parking bays will be added, followed by resurfacing of pavements and finally improvements to crossing points. More painted bays will be introduced by the local authority in a future phase of improvements.
Council Leader Rhondda Geekie said the programme would address some of the issues raised during an extensive community consultation process which were held at the start of the masterplan design.
She added: "When asked for their views on this part of the town centre, people told us that they would like to see the quality of pavements and crossing points at junctions improved and they would like more parking. Building on that feedback, we spoke to traders and came up with this project which is starting soon.
"Anyone using the town centre will be aware of different pieces of work going on – all as part of the Town Centre Masterplan. The Barleybank carpark access has changed, new spaces have been added and designs are being drawn up to create a new pubic space at the church.
"The car park behind William Patrick Library has been extended and new steps and landscaping are being created down at West High Street. Things are happening and people should start noticing improvements."
BT is also scheduled to carry out works in Townhead soon to lay new cables in the footpaths and Councillor Geekie explained: "We are working closely with BT to ensure that their work is timed to allow their cables to be put in prior to us carrying out resurfacing."
