David Wilson Homes has received planning permission to construct 140 new homes in Eskbank.
The development will be situated on the site of the former Jewel and Esk Valley College.
Midlothian Council approved the developer's plans, which will see 94 detached homes, 18 semi-detached homes and 28 flats built on the 6.37 hectare site.
The flats will be erected in two three-storey blocks and will have two bedrooms. Of the houses, 18 will be three-bedrooms, 83 will be four-bedrooms, three will have five-bedrooms, while a further eight will have six-bedrooms.
Each property will be two-storeys in height.
Access to 44 of the homes will be off Ancrum Bank, with the remaining 96 properties accessible from a new entrance off Dalhousie Road.
It is proposed that the two roads will not be linked in order to prevent through traffic.
The plans also include the provision of a children's play area in an area of open space, with public art features also located in this part of the site.
Details of the art features have still to be submitted.
